Pea Soup Party The Swedish Royal family eats pea soup on Thursdays.
The Swedish Club of Sarasota has a Pea Soup Party every year on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in late
February or early March. The Swedish Club will provide traditional Pea Soup with trimmings and participants bring a dish or dessert to share, like Swedish pancakes and plättar with jam. Lingon berries goes over well!

Shrimp Feast
For several years the Swedish Club of Sarasota has sponsored a Scandinavian Shrimp Party! It's not a picnic event, it's a relaxed evening event (typically in April) with limited number of guests, get your reservations in early for this winner, feast on “Peal-and Eat” Shrimps, all you can eat and be with friends! As usual, we will have Baguettes, Sliced Cheese and, maybe even Kalles Caviar that so many of our members like at some of our events. For more information, please see the Calendar page.
Midsummer Fest The Swedish Club of Sarasota typically celebrates Midsummer on a Saturday afternoon, into early evening on the “Midsummer Weekend” in June each year. However, this may not be an annual event as many of our members have left the area for the summer months, and those still around may think it is too warm to be outdoors! Yes, it normally is ‘slightly’ warmer in Florida than in Sweden or even ‘up north’. Please see the Calendar page for the event date this year.
Crayfish Party and Guest Speaker Events
Our very popular event, the annual Scandinavian Cooked Crawfish Party is typically held in October. Why October you say? ... Well, in Sweden they have for the most part already had their crawfish parties, but we postpone the party two months since many of our members and friends are out of town in August. Crawfish has been a delicacy in Sweden since the 16th century. In the early 20th century, restrictions were introduced to crawfishing in Sweden, and the official season was not opened until August 6th of each year. Therefore, August became a month of crawfish feasts, where millions of Swedes partake in mass quantities of crawfish to celebrate the opening of the season. The parties always take place outdoors, and are accompanied by all types of festive crawfish decorations, man-in-the-moon decorative lanterns, crawfish hats, and bibs. So don't miss this popular event that we plan on celebrating here in America as well! Please see the Calendar page for the event date this year.
Reception: Hosted by the Swedish Club of Sarasota, as a Mid-November evening.
Guest Speakers:
The club does not sponsor a Reception and/or Guest Speaker event every year - but when we do, it is received with great interest by members and their guests alike. Recent Guest Speakers have included Ulf Nilson and Lars Henrik Ottoson, both Contributing Editors of Nordstjernan, the oldest Swedish Newspaper in the United States. Ulf Nilson is also a regular columnist in the Swedish Daily Newspaper Expressen. Lars Henrik Ottoson is by many remembered as one of the first reporters of the Swedish National TV and, as the reporter at Yankee Stadium in
NY when Ingemar "Ingo" Johansson knocked out Floyd Paterson for the Heavy Weight boxing title in June of 1959.

In 2005 we enjoyed the presentation by Stig Dalström. The title of the talk was “Rare Jewels of the Andes”, a slide presentation of various “Rare Jewels”, both botanical and human, encountered during many years of traveling in the Andean cloud forests. A travelogue with anecdotes and artwork as well as orchid and jungle pictures, in a laid-back fashion.
Special Entertainment Event - Reception
November 14 2007 the Club had the opportunity to present Barbro Svensson or Lill-Babs as her adoring countrymen know her. Yes this was a ‘sold out’ event.
More than 120 singing, clapping, and laughing Swedes packed the Community Foundation on a Wednesday night to be entertained by a whirlwind of talent.
Lill-Babs managed to turn a plain-vanilla meeting room into a Las Vegas cabaret, mesmerizing the crowd with her heartfelt storytelling, ribald jokes and a mix of tear-jerking ballads and rousing popular hits from a career that spans five decades.
Lill-Babs presented familiar tunes such as “Achy Breaky Heart” and “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.” In all, a sincere, high-energy performance, not to mention the unexpected treat of Benneth Fagerlund’s beautiful harmonies and keyboard accompaniment.
It was indeed a very special evening to all who had the opportunity to be part of this event – with much thanks especially to Mick and Hans Johnsson, Swedish Club Members and personal friends of Lill-Babs but also to the Swedish Ladies Group, to SWEA of TampaBay and to the Swedish Club of Sarasota.

And last but not least, Thank You Lill-Babs! for making this stop with us here on the Sun Coast of Florida during your USA visit – We cannot but say “Most Welcome Back” anytime when on this Continent.
Lucia Celebration
The Swedish Club of Sarasota presents its annual 'Sankta Lucia' pageant. This is a very traditional event. The club is celebrating Lucia the evening of the second Friday of December. The Friday date is chosen so that many of the participants can attend to other Holiday Celebrations elsewhere in the area. At the conclusion of the pageant, Lucia and her attendants will leave the sanctuary by candlelight --- and the Club will serve cookies and coffee with other goodies, including the traditional 'glögg'.
